Standing up – Standing together

The Dolphin Coast and Greater KwaDukuza Community are standing up shoulder to shoulder against the conduct of our KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM).

Despite a legal requirement, as well as platform commitments, the executive of KDM are not engaging and participating with the representative organisations of the community.

The KwaDukuza Residents Forum (KDRF), the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association (DOCRRA), as well as the residents and ratepayers associations of Tinley Manor, Blythedale and Zinkwazi (KORA), recently joined forces and sent a collective letter to KDM highlighting community concerns and requesting a forum where they can discuss the same.  This letter not only targets the refusal of the municipality to meaningfully engage and allow civil society to participate in processes, but shines a light upon continued poor service delivery, lack of performance and consequence management, and overall financial accountability. Despite confirming receipt of the joint letter and some discussions with officials, the leadership of KDM has still not responded to these requests.

The joint action group of KDRF, DOCRRA and KORA, will now implement the next steps to compel KDM to act according to the law and their own stated promise.  The first step of the action group will be to widely share our concerns with various local and national media platforms.

“It is a pity that the KDM leadership persistently ignore the requests from the community to engage and participate willingly”, comments Deon Viljoen on behalf of DOCRRA and KORA.

“We have a plan and a process to enforce this, which we are now going to implement” says Warwick Chapman from KDRF.
